Our Visit to Kennedy Space Center
Last week another snow and ice storm hit Atlanta. There was talk of power outages for several days, and Georgia was declared a state of emergency during the previous snow storm just two weeks ago. At the last minute my husband and I decided to take a road trip. But where would we go?! Our families in Philadelphia and Chicago were dealing with snow and ice as well, as a result of the “Polar Vortex”, so we didn’t want to go there. We were totally over winter and decided to head further south.
Since my children are homeschooled, more specifically unschooled , learning never stops for us……even on vacation! My boys love science and I happen to be married to a science and engineering guru, so we chose to visit Kennedy Space Center. Kennedy Space Center is located right outside of Titusville, FL in Port Canaveral.
My boys are obsessed with space and engineering shuttles and rockets. My BabyCake hasn’t exactly figured out what she loves yet. So for now she goes along with whatever her “boys” are interested in as long as at some point Hello Kitty can be involved.
The Kennedy Space Center Visitors Complex has something for everybody, but what we enjoyed the most was the bus tour that led to the Saturn V Rocket. The Saturn V Rocket is the most complex and most powerful rocket ever made in the world. It took 24 astronauts to the moon from 1968-1972. It’s truly amazing to see. The Saturn V Rocket is 363 feet tall and fully fueled for liftoff weighed 6.2 million pounds!
The Saturn V Rocket is so large, there is no way I could fit it into one photo with my camera.
Notable as well on the bus tour was NASA’s Vehicle Assembly Building. It was used to build American manned launch vehicles and is the largest single story building in the world.
The Kennedy Space Center is filled with hands on activities, simulations, and even an IMAX theater. It can be enjoyed by all ages; my entire family loved it. Of course the kids think that my husband and I are the best parents ever for taking them there…
Has your family ever visited Kennedy Space Center? Would you plan on going in the future? Let’s connect! Leave a comment or find me on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter @mommyweek #mommyweek.

February 17, 2014 at 6:17 pmIt was, Demetria! It was just too many uncertainties surrounding power outages and how long things would be shut down. I would do it again in a heartbeat 🙂

February 18, 2014 at 8:58 amI remember going to the space center for a field trip in school and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Did you try the dot icecream or other dry packed “space food” while you were there? I’ll have to add this to my list of things to do when we come stateside in the summer. It will be a good rainy day or too hot to be outside activity! Great pics, very vivid 🙂

February 18, 2014 at 10:51 pmThanks for reading, Laura! We talked about getting space food, but the kids were so mesmerized by everything we forgot about it. We got this cool space blanket from the gift shop. I loved the indoor options too since it rains so much in Florida. Luckily it was sunny skies the whole time we were there.

February 18, 2014 at 5:01 pmHow awesome was this trip for you guys!! I’m happy you got out of that weather, I heard it was really bad. What a great idea for a homeschooling trip! I will be sure to put this down as one of our adventures to look forward to.

February 18, 2014 at 10:52 pmThis is something we’ve been wanting to do with the kids for a while and decided on a whim to do it. It was good to get away from the ugly weather too. Yes, I’m sure your crew would love it!
