The Color Purple is Coming to Broadway in Atlanta
I have fond memories from my childhood of watching “The Color Purple” several times. My sister, cousins and I knew the movie word for word. We would sing all of the songs together in unison. Even this summer I made reference to the movie on Instagram when sharing a picture of my sister and I. We all know the words!
You and me, Us never part
Makidada
You and me, Us have one heart
Makidada
Ain’t no ocean, ain’t no sea
Makidada
Keep my sistah way from me
Makidada
The Color Purple, written by Alice Walker in 1982, has gone from Pulitzer Prize winning novel, to the big screen, and now as a musical! The Tony Award winning show will be playing in Atlanta from October 24-29th as part of the Fifth Third Bank Broadway in Atlanta 2017/2018 season. If you’ve never read the book, or seen the movie, The Color Purple is a story that spans 40 years, covering the life of a family in rural Georgia. The story follows 14 year old Celie, as she’s forced by her abusive father to marry Mister. Through strength and her voice, Celie conquers the odds and comes into her own.
This revival of THE COLOR PURPLE won two Tony Awards in 2016, including Best Revival of a Musical and two Drama Desk Awards including Outstanding Revival of a Musical. THE COLOR PURPLE revival also won the 2017 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album.
Hailed as “a direct hit to the heart” (The Hollywood Reporter), this joyous American classic conquered Broadway in an all-new “ravishingly re-conceived production that is a glory to behold” (The New York Times) directed by Tony winner John Doyle.
THE COLOR PURPLE will play at Atlanta’s Fox Theatre October 24 – October 29.
The performance schedule is as follows:
Tuesday-Thursday 7:30 p.m.
Friday 8 p.m.
Saturday 2 p.m., 8 p.m.
Sunday 1 p.m., 6:30 p.m.
I know you all want to sing along, like I will be with Shug Avery as she sings songs like “Sister” and “God is Trying to Tell You Something.”
With a soul-raising, Grammy®-winning score of jazz, gospel, ragtime and blues, THE COLOR PURPLE gives an exhilarating new spirit to this Pulitzer Prize-winning story.
Don’t miss this stunning re-imagining of an epic story about a young woman’s journey to love and triumph in the American South. The musical sensation that New York Magazine calls “one of the greatest revivals ever.” Experience the exhilarating power of this Tony-winning triumph!
