Teaching My Daughter Self Esteem from the Inside Out
Now that I’m an adult, I bet you wouldn’t believe that I was picked on almost daily growing up. In school I was called names, and only had a few friends. Fourth grade was one of my worst years as a child. Those experiences actually made a huge impact on my self esteem. Even though I was the smartest kid in my class — I graduated the 8th grade as valedictorian, I still felt inadequate. The words that children say to one another, have a big influence on the way kids think.
Thankfully I’ve confronted those childhood feelings as an adult, cultivated self love and know what true self esteem actually is. Since I have a daughter of my own now, I’m actively working at teaching her what real self love and self esteem is from the inside out. Yes, it’s important to believe that you look beautiful on the outside, but real beauty starts with what we feel about who we are on the inside. True self love is not superficial. Those important traits and qualities we have are what make us feel worthy.
Daily I strengthen my daughters self esteem by going over meaningful affirmations with her. You can help your daughter do the same by making a list and saying them together.
Here are ten affirmations to help you get started:
I Am Smart
I Am Creative
I Am Energetic
I Am Friendly
I Am Kind
I Am a Leader
I Am Brave
I Am Courageous
I Am Confident
I Am Honest
