Is your family traveling for Spring Break this week? Today I’m featuring a guest post from Roni, The Travel Guru with 5 Ways to Enjoy Spring Break Travel with your Family! Roni has traveled all over the world, and today she is sharing some of her tried and true tips with you all!
1. Be responsible with technology
I’m sure many of you want to update your twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and any other social media you love to browse and your family understands that. However, I want you to think from the point of view of your children or significant other by putting yourself in their shoes. Vacation is a time to relax and enjoy time with those you love the most. If the whole time you are there you are constantly on your phone texting away or listening to music and not talking to them, how do you think they would feel? I’m not saying to completely cut off social media because it’s fun to share pics and see what’s going on in the world, but try limiting your usage and spend more time connecting with your family.
2. Let everyone have his or her own room
I know this sounds expensive but it is doable. Apartment rentals are becoming more and more popular because you can get more space for less money in many cities. Sites like airbnb and vrbo have a varied selection of apartments and houses for all budgets. If children can have their own room that may lessen the chances of fighting on vacation, and bring you much needed peace after a long day of sightseeing. Also, in an apartment rental you can buy food from the grocery store and not have to eat every meal in a restaurant which cuts down on your food costs.
3. Let your children have a say as to where you go
It’s kind of hard to get excited about seeing a city that you had no interest in, right? Of course this won’t work if your kids are too young to have an opinion, but if they are old enough, why not ask them what types of things they are interested in seeing?
- Do you want to swim?
- Do you want to be at a pool or the ocean?
- Do you like museums?
- Do you like the mountains?
- Do you want to be in snow?
- Do you want to take taxis or rent a car, or ride the metro?
These are just a few questions but they can help your child understand what kind of vacation they will be having. Also, they can see that depending on their wants, their choices will affect what can be done.
4. Bring board/card games
Board games can be extremely fun, especially when played with family. There are so many travel versions of different board games that you can take with you on vacation and they won’t take up much valuable space in your suitcase. Your local toy store should carry them or you can do a search online to find the ones that will work for your family. Card games like Uno or a plain deck of cards also work very well.
5. Give each child their own cash
A few months before you will be going on vacation, sit down with your children and let them know what they can do around the house to earn some money. I’m all for kids having their own money but they seem to value it more if they have to work a bit for it. Can they fix your bed? Shred papers from the home office? What about washing the car(s)? Ask then if they have some ideas about what they can do in order to earn some money for the family vacation. This way, they can buy a few things of their own without having to ask you for everything and it also teaches them how to budget. Have you noticed how when a child has to use their own money things suddenly become much more valuable?
Have any of these travel tips helped you with your Spring Break Travel with Family plans? Do you have any to add? You can find Roni blogging over at The Travel Guru, on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter!

March 12, 2014 at 9:51 pmAwesome tips and a great reminder on the technology. I have definitely been guilty of working on vacation. Unfortunately I don’t think we will be going anywhere over spring break but we do have summer plans. I’m going to work on doing less when we are away.
