10 Natural Remedies for Mosquito Bites
It’s not even officially the first day of Summer yet, and I have been bitten by more mosquitoes than I can count. I guess it comes with the territory of living in Georgia, but I don’t want the kids or I to suffer by scratching incessantly. Some people use store bought insect repellent but I try to avoid it. Store bought insect repellent usually contains DEET. DEET is short for Diethyl-meta-toluamide. Research has shown that DEET can have some harmful side effects to humans and pets so it’s best to steer clear of it, if you can.
These 10 Natural Remedies for Mosquito Bites are generally safe to use for relief of those unwanted bites!
1. Aloe Vera – Aloe Vera gel quickly relieves itching and swelling from mosquito bites. Aloe is rich in vitamins and minerals, and acts as an analgesic to stop pain. It is an antipruritic, so it works much like Hydrocortisone when applied topically.
2. Lemon – Lemon juice has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. A few drops will help calm itching and swelling of mosquito bites.
3. Baking Soda – Make a paste of baking soda and warm water to apply to the skin with a q-tip. Baking soda neutralizes the pH of skin causing the itch to stop.
4. Tea Tree Oil – I keep Tea Tree Oil on hand for everything! It’s sort of a cure all. It’s antibacterial, antimicrobial, and can be used as an antiseptic and insecticide. All you need to do is dab a few drops of the oil on the bite for itch relief.
5. Raw Honey – I talk a lot about the benefits and uses of Raw Honey HERE. Raw Honey’s antibacterial properties will prevent the bite from getting infected. Honey soothes itchy, irritated skin.
6. Himalayan Sea Salt – Create a brine by mixing Himalayan Sea Salt and water, then place a compress soaked in the brine on top of the bite. Himalayan Sea Salt offers relief for minor skin irritations.
7. Mint – Fresh mint leaves mashed into a paste and used as a topical anesthetic will offer a cooling sensation and quick relief for itch.
8. Apple Cider Vinegar – Apple Cider Vinegar also restores the bodies natural pH similar to Baking Soda. It neutralizes the skin stopping the itch.
9. Tea Bag – Place a cooled, wet tea bag on top of mosquito bites for relief. Tea bags relieve inflammation and reduce swelling.
10. Onion – Freshly slice an onion and place it on top of the bite for a few minutes. The enzymes in onions stops itching, swelling, and inflammation.
