Momsomnia: Insomnia Affects Moms
Who’s up burning the midnight oil? I have to admit, I’m guilty more times than not of staying up way later than I should at night. When the kids finally get to bed, I get started on cleaning, laundry, and of course scrolling social media for an hour. Or, if I do go to bed early because I’m exhausted from a busy day with the kids, I find myself waking up after sleeping three hours like it’s the next day! It all started after I had my oldest son. Of course those newborn hours keep new mothers up at night, but those hours became my new norm and have followed me over the years. I no longer have a newborn in my home, but I still can’t get a full night’s sleep. Surprisingly, the biggest symptom of insomnia isn’t falling asleep at night, it’s actually being able to stay sleep and get a full nights rest.
Insomnia affects almost 4 million Americans but typically goes undiagnosed because it’s not something people are willing to discuss with their doctors. Getting a full nights rest is really important. It’s vital to our health! Adequate sleep actually keeps our immune system functioning properly, and our memories sharp. I can tell when my memory is affected by not getting enough sleep. It’s difficult to think straight, and I easily forget things. On average, 72% of Americans miss almost three weeks of sleep per year. That’s a total of 470 hours!
I like to think of myself as being pretty health conscious, that’s why I am dedicating more time and effort to get enough sleep because I need it. If you have trouble sleeping through the night, there are actually options available to treat insomnia. Start an important conversation with your doctor about your daily routine and how it affects your rest during the night.
