Five Ways to Handle Back to School Sniffles
My family is so excited that school is officially back in session! This means more trips to the library, park dates, and field trips. Being on the go more means there is always a chance to pick up a cold from other children and cold and flu season is right around the corner. There are a few steps I take for my family to prevent illness, and to make sure we’re always at our best. Sometimes, no matter what we do, it’s difficult to prevent catching a cold.
Here are some ways to handle the back to school sniffles if they come your way:
- Proper Hand Washing – Proper hand washing is so important in cold prevention, and even lessening the time you or your loved ones are ill. Make sure everyone is washing their hands with soap after using the bathroom, before eating, and throughout the day. Tell your little ones to count to 20 as they lather their hands with soap before they rinse.
- Eating Healthy – Eating healthy is a great way to lessen the time you have a cold. Eating a variety of fruits and vegetables, especially those high in vitamin C will help your family get well faster. I like to always have raw honey, lemon, and ginger on hand to make a healthy and soothing tea.
- Stay hydrated – It’s easier to become dehydrated when you have a cold. Have you little ones drink lots of water, orange juice, and even let them sip some tea if they like. Having lots of fluids, especially warm ones help with runny noses and sore throats.
- Take a steamy bath or shower – Help your little ones sit in the bathroom when it’s really steamy to assist in clearing nasal passages. A steamy bathroom is a great natural decongestant and it helps to soothe irritating cold symptoms.
- Blow Your Nose – Help your little ones to blow their nose correctly. Blowing the nose helps to keep the sinuses clear and removes mucus. Make sure your children don’t blow too hard!
