Five Tips for Keeping Your Family Healthy This Summer
Congratulations, moms! You made it to the summer!! For many it doesn’t necessarily mean a break from the school time hustle, because our children start summer camp, we’re traveling, checking things off of our summer bucket lists, and still generally busy. My oldest son just finished three weeks of camp and it’s given me some great insight into what things would look like for my family if my children were in school vs being homeschooled. So kudos to you moms that go through school pick up lines daily; it’s not easy! Since summer is here, the one thing that I’ve noticed that is synonymous for most families across the board is how much more time we spend in the kitchen or consuming in general. Today I’m going to share a few tips to assist you in keeping your family healthy this summer!
Five Tips to Keep Your Family Healthy This Summer
Hydrate – I know this goes without saying, but during the hot summer months we all need to drink more water! Children who are busy and burning energy especially need to make sure they are hydrated. When you leave home make sure everyone has glass water bottle or stainless steel canteen for drinking. It can be more difficult to get little ones to drink water, so add some berries to make it more exciting for them.
Wear sunscreen – It’s a common myth that African American families have no need for sunscreen. That’s completely untrue! Melanated skin tones need protection from the sun as well. Be sure to protect yourself and your children with a good quality sunscreen before you head outside.
Protect against heat exhaustion – Most families can’t wait to get outside during the summer! With temperatures soaring well into the 90’s it becomes easy for children to suffer from heat exhaustion. In my experience, on really hot days it’s best to go out early in the morning before 11am, and again later in the afternoon. In the middle of the day heat can become unbearable and for certain people, dangerous. Enjoy indoor fun or wait until the temps have cooled down.
Increase fruit & veggie intake – Fruits are a great way for the family to have a sweet treat, without any added sugar! Peaches and watermelon are readily available here in Georgia and always at a great price. When it’s really hot outside, I’m not excited about cooking but I will create a delicious Cobb salad for the entire family to enjoy.
Take Natrol Gummies – I love the new Natrol Gummies for my entire family! In the past it’s been like tug of war with my children to get them to take their vitamins consistently because they don’t like to swallow pills and they don’t like the taste. Natrol Multivitamin Gummies are made with 26 fruits and veggies, and they taste great. There are no artificial flavors, colors, sweeteners, or preservatives. If you guys have followed my food sensitivity journey with my middle son, who is epileptic, then you know how important this is to my family! They are made with organic ingredients, vegetarian, Non-GMO, and also gelatin free so that means there are no animal by-products. In the past it’s been very difficult to find a children’s vitamin that’s gelatin free, so my children have had to take hard multivitamins that aren’t the most pleasant. These vitamins are made with pectin so they are less likely to stick to your teeth like gelatin-based gummies, so that’s a plus!*
