Five Reasons We Love Charleston, SC
A few months ago, my family headed to Kiawah Island, SC for the weekend, and we spent a lot of our time in Charleston. Charleston, SC is one of my favorite places to visit in the southeast. My in-laws are originally from Charleston, and every time we visit it is absolutely beautiful. The homes are filled with character, there are cobblestone streets, and the waterfront is breathtaking. Charleston’s French Quarter is filled with history and charm. My kids always get in a mini school lesson when we visit, just by walking down the streets.
Five Reasons We Love Charleston, SC!
1. History – Charleston is filled with historic buildings whose roots trace as far back as the American Revolution. Charleston is home to the Old Slave Mart which has been turned into a museum. The Old Slave Mart was where slave auctions were held until 1863. I felt compelled to share this history with my children and amazed that these buildings are still in tact. The emotions that arise when visiting these landmarks are indescribable.
2. Art – Charleston is filled with fine & contemporary art galleries throughout it’s French Quarter and downtown. I snapped a pic of this amazing piece located in The Vendue, which is an Art Hotel & Restaurant. Their walls are covered in unique art pieces.
3. Food – Of course Charleston is well known for it’s food! You can find some of the best shrimp & grits you would have ever eaten in your life. Charleston is all about low country cuisine. I can’t leave Charleston without having some sort of seafood. There is a wide variety of restaurants to choose from.
4. Scenery – Charleston has to be one of the most beautiful cities I’ve visited in the US. Lots of the homes are original and date back to pre Civil War era. As you walk through the French Quarter you can tell that no one home or business is like the next. Each is very individual and unique. You can hop on a carriage tour and take a ride through the city and learn all about it’s history.
5. Southern Hospitality – People in Charleston are genuinely nice. The woman pictured below has a small basket weaving shop near the waterfront. She taught the children all about the history of basket weaving in Charleston. She and her sister make each one by hand, and it is truly an art that has been passed down generation by generation. She was nice enough to let the children each have a small item from her shop.
Every time we go to Charleston, it’s always a wonderful experience. There is so much to see and do, that I can’t cover everything here. My family loves to visit and I hope yours will too!
