A Sugar Bug On My Tooth Book Review
Did you know that February was National Children’s Dental Health Month? Studies show that almost 50% of children ages 2 to 5 have never been to the dentist. “A Sugar Bug On My Tooth” is a book that was written to help take the fear out of a preschoolers first time to the dentist written by dentist Linda Sturrup and illustrated by Reginald William Butler. Going to the dentist shouldn’t be a fearful thing for any child, but a lot of first experiences create anxiety in them.
“A Sugar Bug On My Tooth” is beautifully illustrated and well worded so that children understand there is nothing to fear about the dentist. It follows the story of Natalie Jean’s first trip to the dentist with her mom. At first she is afraid because she see’s another child crying and she’s unsure of what to expect once she’s called back to be seen.
Natalie Jean is comforted by her dentist as he discovers a cavity and calls it a “sugar bug.” He gently explains to her the process of filling her tooth, and lets her know she’ll have a special star placed on top of it. Natalie Jean loved the word “star filling.”
After Natalie Jean’s dentist is done giving her a special star filling, she receives a “star patient” sticker and balloon. She’s excited that the dentist wasn’t so bad after all, and now she thinks it’s fun to take a trip to the dentist.
I loved this story for BabyCake, and we’ve read it at least a dozen times since we’ve gotten it. She’s not afraid of going to the dentist, and now wants me to make her another dental appointment ASAP! She loves to turn the pages and read the story back to me. It’s perfect for little ones.
This wonderful book can be found online at ASugarBugOnMyTooth.com, Amazon.com, Authorhouse.com, Barnesandnoble.com and Booksamillion.com, as well as at local bookstores nationwide. There is also a Microsoft Windows 8 ReadPlay app, that creates an interactive experience for your child as they read the book.
Has your preschooler been to the dentist before? What techniques do you use to ease their fears before a dental visit?
