In this post I outline 5 Simple Steps to find Free Things to Do in your City. I homeschool my children and we do “field trips” weekly. But did you all know I rarely pay for anything we do? We go to museums, cool parks and gardens, and local festivals all for the price of FREE.
1. Museums. To find free admission to museums first start with the museums site itself. There should be a page that lists free or discounted admission days. Museums also offer discounts or free days for educators, homeschoolers, active duty service men/women, veterans, and gov’t employees. Are you a Bank of America card holder? They offer free admission to over 150 museums every first full weekend of the month. See here for a participating museum in your city http://museums.bankofamerica.com.
2. Local playgrounds and state parks. I’ve found some pretty cool local parks and community gardens in my search for free things to do. If you want to go on a hike or nature walk check out your state parks. They are usually a short drive away. Some parks charge a small fee for parking, usually under $5.
3. Festivals. Each season most cities have festivals associated with the time of the year for free admission. Google seasonal festivals for your city and pack a lunch to make it a free event for the whole family.
4. Utilize local news publications. Local parents magazines and news sites routinely post free things happening in or around the city weekly. Check the sites frequently as free events are often posted last minute.
5. Utilize social media. “Like” and “Follow” local museums, parks, gardens and bloggers on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Venues post discounts, free days, and offer some social media only specific deals. Local bloggers tend to know about events and what’s happening around the city before the general public does.
*Don’t forget some free events have registration deadlines and special stipulations to participate. Always read the fine print. Enjoy!

September 7, 2013 at 7:29 pmThanks! I see a lot of deals first on social media and hurry and go register before spaces fill up if they are limited. We just went to the Aquarium and World of Coca Cola today, all for FREE.

November 9, 2013 at 10:08 pmI absolutely love the tips. I haven’t been out much in the habitat that I’ve called home for the past five years, but I’ve made a commitment to myself that I will get out more. These tips will definitely help my quest.
